Even someone I greatly respect and enjoy hearing from, Monty Don, advocates with the passion of 19th century missionary on his first visit to Africa, turning compost. Which is fine… unless it puts you off altogether. A six-foot strapping gardener might think this beats going to the gym but if you’ve just had your nails done it ain’t gonna wash.
It doesn’t have to be this way. Whilst turning may speed up compost making, it’s not the case that it makes better compost necessarily. Do you need it more quickly (and by implication more of it)? More is always better but that cuts both ways. If you are put off composting altogether by such displays of vigorous manual labour there will be none, so however slow or small a quantity it would be better to have some than none. These days there are many bins available that mean minimal effort and still great compost will appear, as if by magic, in due course.
Advice about composting from the gardening aristocracy and even the government seems to come from a place of fear – don’t put this in – we’ll come and take it away for you and… and what? Place it in a landfill for you?
