The Small Composter for Urban Living

Small composterNo one thinks that composting applies if you live in a flat or apartment but if you make waste, it’s relevant! And everybody makes waste. More surprising is that there are ways to compost with no outside space.

The most obvious is the wormery which can decompose your kitchen scraps into a nutritious liquid feed that can in turn be used for house plants. Understandably however not everyone likes the idea of sharing their space with such squirmy pets. If you do fancy a spot of vermiculture see the article The Lowdown on Wormery Worms.

The Bokashi bin is a way of reducing the amount of waste you put out for the binmen. Kitchen scraps are put into a small plastic bucket and a bran added which ferments the material. It smells a tad a picklish but if you’re subject to the threat of rubbish tax this could certainly help. For more on Bokashi see the article Would Bokashi Suit You?

In San Francisco it is now illegal not to sort your rubbish and composting is required for all organic matter. NatureMill has come up with a method of indoor composting that occupies no more than a normal bin space. It does require a small amount electricity to run (less than a dollar a month) but this powers the air flow and temperature so that the composting process is properly managed. The downside? It does cost, this piece of technology, and it isn’t available everywhere yet! There are currently only two distributors in Europe, one in Turin and the other in Luxemburg.

If you do make some compost or liquid feed any area of earth will welcome it. If there is a communal garden you’ll see it bloom as a result of your care. Can you think of an ailing plant near you?
